<br />
<br />
Summer in Somers beams on, and here are some more things the garden has to show for it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Our sunflowers are growing proud and strong--and we don't just love them because they're beautiful! They are attracting plenty of interested birds and insects who help pollinate our plants and keep the garden a healthy, diverse little ecosystem. . . And not only that! In the fall, the after-school Garden Club can use the seeds to roast for a tasty snack. Did we mention that these sunflowers completely seeded themselves this year? How wonderfully low-maintenance.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nUBa1pIvHzw/U9aFHvumecI/AAAAAAAAAIA/Bsev0Lz4GsQ/s1600/IMG_3767.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nUBa1pIvHzw/U9aFHvumecI/AAAAAAAAAIA/Bsev0Lz4GsQ/s1600/IMG_3767.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you'll remember those promising brownish berries just on the verge of ripeness from my last post, my volunteers and I were thrilled to see juicy red berries ready for our consumption this past week. There aren't any camps going at this time of the summer, but a few lucky students stopped by the school and got to harvest a few for a snack.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wR-CxYOANCk/U9aFkdjejpI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/nvwMfwXhEc8/s1600/IMG_3843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wR-CxYOANCk/U9aFkdjejpI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/nvwMfwXhEc8/s1600/IMG_3843.jpg" height="320" width="239" /> </a></div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
On the left are some exquisite bean flowers on the purple bush beans from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds via FoodCorps... Thanks, FoodCorps! And on the right is the beginning of one of many zucchini that have shot upwards and outwards for the past month. Those things can <i>grow</i>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EWuq266EnE4/U9aFuEh3LxI/AAAAAAAAAIk/ztp4A9Q6O1g/s1600/IMG_3846.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EWuq266EnE4/U9aFuEh3LxI/AAAAAAAAAIk/ztp4A9Q6O1g/s1600/IMG_3846.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And the whole garden, in all of its newly wood-chipped order. We hope the wood chips will keep it looking sharp when kids come back to school! Thanks SO MUCH to our volunteers who made this possible, and happy end of July, everyone!</div>

After months of cold and wet weather, the Montana summer has finally exploded into days of 12-13 hours of hot, beautiful, bask-ible sun. And suddenly everything is growing, including at our Somers School Garden! Here are some highlights . . .</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The broccoli is forming heads:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z0oeyANre1Q/U86xBnFaz_I/AAAAAAAAAGw/U6Boi-fOwOg/s1600/IMG_3567.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-z0oeyANre1Q/U86xBnFaz_I/AAAAAAAAAGw/U6Boi-fOwOg/s1600/IMG_3567.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The garlic scapes are curling and bulging with future flowers:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rReTTvQa5lc/U86xCHwScFI/AAAAAAAAAG0/NIoUY6L3KRo/s1600/IMG_3568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rReTTvQa5lc/U86xCHwScFI/AAAAAAAAAG0/NIoUY6L3KRo/s1600/IMG_3568.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our newly seeded zucchini and buttercup squash are growing leafy:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dn_hqTpfhdA/U86xCnHCuLI/AAAAAAAAAG8/ZiMIKQU2LYE/s1600/IMG_3569.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Dn_hqTpfhdA/U86xCnHCuLI/AAAAAAAAAG8/ZiMIKQU2LYE/s1600/IMG_3569.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our Red Russian Kale and red cabbage are growing big and strong:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EDiVFQfxRoE/U86xKCqq4NI/AAAAAAAAAHc/-lxrP8nCVlU/s1600/IMG_3572.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EDiVFQfxRoE/U86xKCqq4NI/AAAAAAAAAHc/-lxrP8nCVlU/s1600/IMG_3572.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And our raspberries are forming, to be ready in a few weeks! See those greyish, aggregate fruits full of possibilities? Yum.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TnEMWgtSGK0/U86xLFp28rI/AAAAAAAAAHk/9In3johkoBY/s1600/IMG_3573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TnEMWgtSGK0/U86xLFp28rI/AAAAAAAAAHk/9In3johkoBY/s1600/IMG_3573.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Things are really happening! We can't wait to get harvesting and prepping food for our school food program--stay tuned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-76146477740547906232014-06-17T08:07:00.005-07:002014-06-17T11:28:31.608-07:00And . . . We're BACK! The 2014 Edition<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Three years later, I am reviving this blog from the very beginnings of the Somers School Garden in Somers, Montana, to share with the world how our garden is doing in the summer of 2014! My name is Zoe Tucker, and I'm the current FoodCorps Service Member serving in Somers and Lakeside as well as in Bigfork and Cayuse Prairie Schools. I've been teaching in classrooms, assisting with procuring local food for the cafeterias, and engaging kids in the garden this whole school year (check out the Montana FoodCorps blog <a href="http://www.montanafoodcorps.org/">here</a>), but now that it is summer in Somers again, it seemed like the time to start posting some pictures. . . </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like this one of third graders at Lakeside Elementary dissecting some dirt earlier this spring!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jiOl8dMDF6U/U6BYx8s4njI/AAAAAAAAAFs/mJoOXX_l7dg/s1600/IMG_2958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jiOl8dMDF6U/U6BYx8s4njI/AAAAAAAAAFs/mJoOXX_l7dg/s1600/IMG_2958.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Anyway, some high points of the year: at Somers Middle School, we had a small but faithful Garden Club crew who met after school to plant seeds, transplant starts, weed, generally tend the garden, and come up with ideas for how to make the garden more popular among the other students. We will resume that next fall and hopefully it can grow a little each year! Led by Robin Vogler, our intrepid Food Service Director, held our annual Montana Food Day in October to showcase local Montana produce across the menu, and tried out a few new recipes and items such as Montana lentil hummus and local beets, both of which went over pretty well with the middle schoolers. At Lakeside Elementary, we continued serving snacks through the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, highlighting many delicious local products including apples, butternut squash, radishes, and even kale for National Kale Day. We also continued to cultivate our hydroponic greenhouse at Somers, which we use primarily to grow head lettuce for the school salad bar. Nice, eh?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6eSYtizjGXs/U6Bb9EtmcdI/AAAAAAAAAF8/rYFOwXYTi9s/s1600/IMG_2292.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6eSYtizjGXs/U6Bb9EtmcdI/AAAAAAAAAF8/rYFOwXYTi9s/s1600/IMG_2292.jpg" height="320" width="239" /> </a></div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
In May, we had a wonderful work day featuring the folks from Montana Conservation Corps--our ever-faithful helpers in the garden--and the awesome youth from the Center for Restorative Youth Justice. This was the BEFORE, A.K.A. the Land of Quackgrass:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUMbvasoKkw/U6BV3cFxv7I/AAAAAAAAAFA/GWJHE7cRauM/s1600/IMG_3014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZUMbvasoKkw/U6BV3cFxv7I/AAAAAAAAAFA/GWJHE7cRauM/s1600/IMG_3014.JPG" height="297" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The worst of it--it's hard to look at:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1TmnTbl9GOA/U6BWSzHzfvI/AAAAAAAAAFU/pd0OyenWUsY/s1600/IMG_3016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1TmnTbl9GOA/U6BWSzHzfvI/AAAAAAAAAFU/pd0OyenWUsY/s1600/IMG_3016.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
But our devoted volunteers really went at those vicious rhizomes, and here is AFTER:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vRbmfOIb_Eg/U6BWH7wlinI/AAAAAAAAAFM/tTU9rniTbFA/s1600/IMG_3017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vRbmfOIb_Eg/U6BWH7wlinI/AAAAAAAAAFM/tTU9rniTbFA/s1600/IMG_3017.JPG" height="298" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Note the brand-new three-bin compost system next to the school, the newly transplanted broccoli on the right, and a significantly reduced population of quackgrass. . . We hope.<br />
<br />
Thanks, MCC and CRYJ! You all rock. Now, our broccoli, kale, cabbage, tomatoes, pumpkins, onions, garlic, tomatillos and sunflowers are on their way to success. More pictures coming soon!<br />

hanging in there, Robin Vogler (Food Services Director and Nutrition
teacher) sent us the harvest totals:<br />
<br />
120 pounds of zucchini-not counting a random few<br />
114 pounds of pumpkins<br />
23 pounds of buttercup squash<br />
53 pounds of hubbard squash<br />
15 pounds of potatoes- these were<span> </span><em><span>D</span>elicious</em>, served them oven roasted, olive oil & sea salt-YUMM for our Montana Harvest Menu Day<br />
19 pounds of carrots-although very few of these were edible-strange deformed and bitter-unfortuneately<br />
Broccoli is still alive<br />
Cabbage- no yield,but nice foliage :)<br />
5 pounds lettuce varieties<br />
Onions/garlic still in the ground<br />
<br />
We are SO excited
about how much this garden produced, especially since none of our plants
were able to get into the ground until July! And we know the garden

We are so honored, Jamie is such an inspiration. We can't believe that a blog we started mostly so that our moms could stay updated on the progress of our garden is being recognized by one of our idols!
<br />
<br />Today is our last day of service and the ending is bittersweet. We're glad we've accomplished all that we have and excited about what's next, but it's tough to leave this beautiful place! Below is a picture of the raised beds, the plants are beginning to spill out of them! Below left are our potato towers with lots of potatoes leafing out the sides. Below right is a sunflower in the courtyard.

<br /><div>Last night we had our potluck dinner at the school. Unfortunately it stormed so we moved the dinner into the cafeteria, but we were glad to be out of the rain! We had lots of great food and company and would like to thank all who attended and brought a yummy dish. If you weren't able to make it, be sure to stop by and see the garden sometime soon, the plants get bigger every day! </div>
<br /><div>Our term of service ends Saturday and we'd like to thank everyone here for their help and support. This has been an incredible experience and definitely one that we'll never forget. </div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-36632462260848327042011-08-04T14:10:00.001-07:002011-08-04T14:21:29.213-07:00Courtyard and Ripe Tomatoes<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5637111447608272594" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq1Fc7AmTz-xtLd-haW9SWXitUwJxpT2lb9cd3rsrfEZAZKYfiG49XygZ-sI9hp5i-ZS9cNeo4r0BnBGvQCB9R2lUsqlk450A60hZso22xdAd-WOqS6ExJUY71nZcALyjJPV73NSrvtL0/s400/ripetomatoes.jpg" />Although the tomatoes above may not look ripe, they are a yellow variety we got from Terrapin Farms and are perfectly ripe! We picked them today and they were delicious! We also picked another zucchini, and more will be ready next week.<br /><br />Also today we finished clearing out the grass and weeds from the courtyard beds. Much of it is now empty, but it gives us room to put new plants in. The bed below left has delphinium, mint, chamomile, tulips and forget-me-nots. The bed below right has corn, sunflowers, and lilies. Please bring a dish to share with the group and feel free to bring your family and friends!<br /><br />Speaking of how much the garden has grown, we picked the first zucchini today (below, right)! Just a week ago it was tiny, but the hot weather gave it a growth spurt. Our potato tower (below, left) has also grown significantly, the potatoes are leafing out on all sides. Our bed of broccoli, cauliflower and onions (below, center) is doing well and hopefully will start producing soon!<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHgmd9-n7Sxgd88ES2pNrRIJJA60T3JAjGfZJIcHUYHQ03ZV04Rbd95qHiZycYP4cZ-S0Cs7P_niwrOyLdfh53iOj1kqeGjzRv6xoZvyd8isaNI35QCsuCE6h71r182an9o7Bx0V76Bw0/s1600/zuccplant.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635936898628859714" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHgmd9-n7Sxgd88ES2pNrRIJJA60T3JAjGfZJIcHUYHQ03ZV04Rbd95qHiZycYP4cZ-S0Cs7P_niwrOyLdfh53iOj1kqeGjzRv6xoZvyd8isaNI35QCsuCE6h71r182an9o7Bx0V76Bw0/s320/zuccplant.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWmyMdzPhwkYnKQTVoLESVbcZAOe1Qdo79APjiRSarEEnXJzkXZVBvj91epdguVST6YMfKdf2sfM0FPgdmJtboZKuW8xh4WdiX4IOBhUZrt10qpwEctreqaLbGkzuHR3s6KgCUGclDJE/s1600/potato+tower1.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 191px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635937058014980274" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNWmyMdzPhwkYnKQTVoLESVbcZAOe1Qdo79APjiRSarEEnXJzkXZVBvj91epdguVST6YMfKdf2sfM0FPgdmJtboZKuW8xh4WdiX4IOBhUZrt10qpwEctreqaLbGkzuHR3s6KgCUGclDJE/s320/potato+tower1.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTBv0Jd8fictwBDQvI9DcL3S-xbZ5YkP2wz8rpUFQL47N7WCfsCCG_FZNCA1Krq55vc4Ek1C_V0GeyHkYNzqsbQBB03DkTIUdhOG3L-ClAH-trpbqE6CgTrdmDUv5-oLiI5EFosqNOhmg/s1600/brocccaul.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5635936676722844370" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTBv0Jd8fictwBDQvI9DcL3S-xbZ5YkP2wz8rpUFQL47N7WCfsCCG_FZNCA1Krq55vc4Ek1C_V0GeyHkYNzqsbQBB03DkTIUdhOG3L-ClAH-trpbqE6CgTrdmDUv5-oLiI5EFosqNOhmg/s320/brocccaul.jpg" /></a></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-70017559525116216202011-07-27T13:01:00.000-07:002011-07-27T13:05:29.658-07:00Building the Tipi Trellis<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2qtVJdnxL29gmkcBHD1e9Rhwgmvn2MaB_MDggJCtkdXgvblPdmTdX6B4nQKN1uQavaO-WxT37b0Tifw1fXgZnvkQ3przLJDQnCbJRQExAVtiN9M_w60_tQqoKgN6bxo2F7hVqsFi9cgg/s1600/us+in+tipi.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 239px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634124960616943938" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2qtVJdnxL29gmkcBHD1e9Rhwgmvn2MaB_MDggJCtkdXgvblPdmTdX6B4nQKN1uQavaO-WxT37b0Tifw1fXgZnvkQ3przLJDQnCbJRQExAVtiN9M_w60_tQqoKgN6bxo2F7hVqsFi9cgg/s400/us+in+tipi.jpg" /></a> Inspired by tipi trellises that Tory built in urban community gardens back in Providence, RI, we decided to put one in the courtyard. The kids will be able to go inside of it and hopefully enjoy some shade provided by peas and climbing beans. We planted the peas we'd been growing in the greenhouse and found that we had some peapods (below). We had help building and planting from some neighborhood kids who stopped by to see what we were doing. They thought the peas tasted great too! <br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEginj7HCKOrjaSx1a8sJOrShI1PUcfahCLuLQzFLGxuoYFqBKKkb0mgI2upXf5kMRLYOFiXwVP02E6il45RR-asiW2mlggjcPjmKtrRRtsCsKaSYKtWrR-XhLm1P3cOQrLROi0im0tUx8U/s1600/peapod.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 191px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634124894696973874" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEginj7HCKOrjaSx1a8sJOrShI1PUcfahCLuLQzFLGxuoYFqBKKkb0mgI2upXf5kMRLYOFiXwVP02E6il45RR-asiW2mlggjcPjmKtrRRtsCsKaSYKtWrR-XhLm1P3cOQrLROi0im0tUx8U/s320/peapod.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-35751401410354079182011-07-27T12:49:00.000-07:002011-07-27T13:00:51.387-07:00More Pictures From the Workparty!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDs7YhqkIRJRzqX6SHfzvlzwzJtaOmw2S-YwIobMrS-hEa_h_Wp1dbltRLYbbc00ndjWek6F10ya5YPZG246iJb2XDschwt1Zl3CQcN_0NEbQBt70Otw5XDTDoNNh4FPkGSJLCQizebP0/s1600/IMG_1468.JPG"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634123821316723458" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDs7YhqkIRJRzqX6SHfzvlzwzJtaOmw2S-YwIobMrS-hEa_h_Wp1dbltRLYbbc00ndjWek6F10ya5YPZG246iJb2XDschwt1Zl3CQcN_0NEbQBt70Otw5XDTDoNNh4FPkGSJLCQizebP0/s400/IMG_1468.JPG" /></a>One of our supervisors and a co-founder of Montana FoodCorps, Crissie McMullan, came to our Workparty and sent us some pictures. We had 20 people throughout the day and got a lot done. With all the extra hands we got five planters (below, left) filled with peppers, tomatoes, French tarragon, and marigolds (to keep the bugs away). We also used the rototiller and got the raspberries planted (below, right). We cleared space in the courtyard and planted corn, sunflowers, delphinium, mint, chamomile, and more marigolds (far below, left). It felt great to have so many people in the garden and we couldn't believe how fast the work got done with so many extra hands. If you missed the workparty but still want to see the garden, come by any week day, we're usually around 9-5 or leave a comment on the blog!<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVbCbsF862421DQ-qo8FPbjw8zPQoVm3qaqGgdZRHxy0TcMPBPMVO-o96KZJQIlEg4Zs81Va8jCJ60EigZqlKKk5LoVZg5kMIEIQ9BkOMALkAE55LbcDlH17w6mfJRICFUvRV1NP_-Blg/s1600/planters.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5633328153224973746" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVbCbsF862421DQ-qo8FPbjw8zPQoVm3qaqGgdZRHxy0TcMPBPMVO-o96KZJQIlEg4Zs81Va8jCJ60EigZqlKKk5LoVZg5kMIEIQ9BkOMALkAE55LbcDlH17w6mfJRICFUvRV1NP_-Blg/s320/planters.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie92cZDZto8uiqpYbFFtHUN9rhwOJIPgjUhXXqt9eL5Sk8HXJ3hK9oKFwwU0pGzjAj4igk7EGM6oVKj3WIuJqDIAG_wCkhmsdz1j4495Ooe3Ki1JrGd1nuiCXqKmNqgHuKlU9-xvwYQN4/s1600/raspberries.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5633328076935742914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie92cZDZto8uiqpYbFFtHUN9rhwOJIPgjUhXXqt9eL5Sk8HXJ3hK9oKFwwU0pGzjAj4igk7EGM6oVKj3WIuJqDIAG_wCkhmsdz1j4495Ooe3Ki1JrGd1nuiCXqKmNqgHuKlU9-xvwYQN4/s320/raspberries.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYZssB3Sd50gK2wXK_i8HJIzMlfKk3mJxO5MbVzZAF0FeeOPQrvlyRfVt-l4qEEEJcMWQ7QrnV58yki2v0OrMdXxUoKJduj-JvVGrFGk-tye2wKCuZJd63C7EPNzu0zRHb7xWg7jhQpDI/s1600/workparty2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5633327992393278066" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYZssB3Sd50gK2wXK_i8HJIzMlfKk3mJxO5MbVzZAF0FeeOPQrvlyRfVt-l4qEEEJcMWQ7QrnV58yki2v0OrMdXxUoKJduj-JvVGrFGk-tye2wKCuZJd63C7EPNzu0zRHb7xWg7jhQpDI/s320/workparty2.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-14827093008580455972011-07-20T12:41:00.000-07:002011-07-21T13:37:17.461-07:00New Garden Growth<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoiluHAwUntuqTIbQJZdtkAVZ6GDcySQxJIU8wnIjPqYbuldBx3J6KYMEi8Up2rS1kzPapQ3D476vEA5zWdLShKindRag_83_oROhr8JmRCJ4LUoSXqj1KWaWEmyiBCxb99COdH-Q-oV4/s1600/squashblossoms.jpg"><img style="text-align: center; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 400px; display: block; height: 239px;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631522565013003250" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoiluHAwUntuqTIbQJZdtkAVZ6GDcySQxJIU8wnIjPqYbuldBx3J6KYMEi8Up2rS1kzPapQ3D476vEA5zWdLShKindRag_83_oROhr8JmRCJ4LUoSXqj1KWaWEmyiBCxb99COdH-Q-oV4/s400/squashblossoms.jpg" border="0" /></a> The weather has heated up here in Somers and the plants are starting to perk up. Our squash plants have a ton of blossoms on them (above), we have our first tomato ripening (below right), our first potato is leafing out the side of one of the potato towers (below left), and the lettuce and carrots are growing happily (below center). We are looking forward to our first Work Party this Saturday, July 23, 10 am- 3pm. Come by and see the plants, get your hands dirty and enjoy the beautiful weather! Bring water and garden gloves and a spade if you have one, and invite your family, friends and neighbors. This involved pounding in metal fence posts and lashing the chain link panels to the posts (no easy feat for just two people, on a slope, with donated materials). Though it was stressful at times, we're glad that it will keep the deer out of the garden. Robin was here to help and took a picture of us "stuck" in the garden as a thunderstorm was threatening.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRO6OD4-a3yEssdKVefs52HAQ-HBVXbDJBwkQ5dXBlFWM-IOLB_i6dP-O7OFns5F_yO3XEVZYlk_R4iOAWEijNkfxsHIZpK9TGNXH0haCFPIbw_JEtffN-N7R4A-VwAhyVzUSaFpWTd_Q/s1600/longside.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629319725370488482" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRO6OD4-a3yEssdKVefs52HAQ-HBVXbDJBwkQ5dXBlFWM-IOLB_i6dP-O7OFns5F_yO3XEVZYlk_R4iOAWEijNkfxsHIZpK9TGNXH0haCFPIbw_JEtffN-N7R4A-VwAhyVzUSaFpWTd_Q/s320/longside.jpg" /><br /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJUOiBERN8BocCMkY_e90nj1DoGtpYGdppPqiz3gLURe98OVnjttaR6yzS5EKRLZBsbLUkCJGAHYm8fdEbyrVAuWPwwHirIN8FB_OcwSpIo0bVfTNdCeiBKfiMJ2wZkACahKdmk2A9iuY/s1600/us2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 191px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5629319811219515266" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJUOiBERN8BocCMkY_e90nj1DoGtpYGdppPqiz3gLURe98OVnjttaR6yzS5EKRLZBsbLUkCJGAHYm8fdEbyrVAuWPwwHirIN8FB_OcwSpIo0bVfTNdCeiBKfiMJ2wZkACahKdmk2A9iuY/s320/us2.jpg" /></a>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-1948237761627629932011-07-13T14:18:00.000-07:002011-07-13T14:29:41.485-07:00We're on the Fence!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirB8oOmBntc9P8aB1K6ME23RY8JEJyphSxcCoXKV5yS3lqIeifncu20SeYmEFFWFp6kt9maoICaqcR6sx06ffxI4mmGaxT43jyprQ3YKzCEJsrx6hPhFVq6x7MTxY5CdkcQ_eTvqsDnCw/s1600/fence1.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628949377506909506" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirB8oOmBntc9P8aB1K6ME23RY8JEJyphSxcCoXKV5yS3lqIeifncu20SeYmEFFWFp6kt9maoICaqcR6sx06ffxI4mmGaxT43jyprQ3YKzCEJsrx6hPhFVq6x7MTxY5CdkcQ_eTvqsDnCw/s400/fence1.jpg" /></a> Although it may not look much like a garden right now, we're on the home stretch! After some initial difficulty, we started to put up our chain link deer fence (thanks to Tim Rogge for donating the fence panels and expertise!). Once the fence is complete we will be able to remove the remay cloth from the beds and our plants will be able to get some direct sunlight! Yesterday we also patched the drip irrigation system in the flower garden in front of the school. The delphinium are blooming and we pulled out a bunch of weeds to let the flowers thrive!<br /><br /><br /><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628951297954738370" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrDwuhvrnk3o9UfQesqjkrcZpjP2-J1P3el-Xe-d1g3a-xb31nxT7m0Scx2mtZgdYrjfEAosKj-si15owwMAFyCJBW_ttseb7UReo0_V-2myYr_wKGWbuTxBpGsisZcqqiCMdY_eYPdWM/s320/front.jpg" /></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-68979224736324987252011-07-11T14:02:00.000-07:002011-07-11T14:09:39.315-07:00Additions and Revisions<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVLOd2JDFG91YHWPr8LbNscXDGR6CnX3mVFIYYWKPCHcE74yMck_WTpvjlaTL3Zt_mZ-FgLURZjbotRXzgGskVIRM0_H0Zj-LscPjDoTLZ_xZAq4e2Ze9YKLyutrDkZFIpjZ8xYZC8FM0/s1600/2towers.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628203451864826754" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVLOd2JDFG91YHWPr8LbNscXDGR6CnX3mVFIYYWKPCHcE74yMck_WTpvjlaTL3Zt_mZ-FgLURZjbotRXzgGskVIRM0_H0Zj-LscPjDoTLZ_xZAq4e2Ze9YKLyutrDkZFIpjZ8xYZC8FM0/s400/2towers.jpg" /></a> We'd love to say that everything works perfectly the first time, but that's not the way that gardening (or most of life) goes. After the weekend, we returned to find that we'd built the Leaning Tower of Potatoes. Concerned that it would topple downhill, we decided to build a second tower and split the original one in half. We also added extra supports on the sides, hopefully this will keep the towers vertical! <br /><br />Our peas are some of the few plants still in the greenhouse, but they are doing well. Today they sprouted their first blossom (below left). In the beds we also have some new blossoms, including two on our jalepeno plant, which is also sprouting a pepper (below right).<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNe9-m5y-jxpKcpN7zw20PiMBB2167jWFy84T19UIvcxB5iGJUo-FkJNG6ApZ32kI5kkJON02ErtU5ZYE7ECAtrBdZNJ3CPgvzc0wARQ1Zwx1JfttA-Bgv8G_OTyxyD73jsWVDYBP_VQ/s1600/peablossom.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628203375331324258" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimNe9-m5y-jxpKcpN7zw20PiMBB2167jWFy84T19UIvcxB5iGJUo-FkJNG6ApZ32kI5kkJON02ErtU5ZYE7ECAtrBdZNJ3CPgvzc0wARQ1Zwx1JfttA-Bgv8G_OTyxyD73jsWVDYBP_VQ/s320/peablossom.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMte8tRtXhoAshr9SrOzu9goe1uTtGaXiNOjw4m3SMu3b_prWPSAzAUmYaCRz4VfdJzpfXsrb1G8YnDaeRleM4UqB1qkiCrmM8lVCPqapn_todvS-Fqfc7pN4KGtErDVOfLaGPW-xwYoc/s1600/pepper.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 191px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5628203285327754386" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMte8tRtXhoAshr9SrOzu9goe1uTtGaXiNOjw4m3SMu3b_prWPSAzAUmYaCRz4VfdJzpfXsrb1G8YnDaeRleM4UqB1qkiCrmM8lVCPqapn_todvS-Fqfc7pN4KGtErDVOfLaGPW-xwYoc/s320/pepper.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-47077765995073165082011-07-08T13:05:00.000-07:002011-07-08T13:37:50.893-07:00Building a Potato Tower<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWSjYneAH_5O1O6ojlLNvm2TuVMV4l_3eQLFiZ7Z9m3cFw04UFJZ_cEIeUF5y5HiGBd6ndAwMgk6USxp203llGmsb4BbpiOXbF-zbHzoNzCP_kiXabolHOOwC-OInIn7roMMecj_p-zf4/s1600/potato1.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627075866700778946" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWSjYneAH_5O1O6ojlLNvm2TuVMV4l_3eQLFiZ7Z9m3cFw04UFJZ_cEIeUF5y5HiGBd6ndAwMgk6USxp203llGmsb4BbpiOXbF-zbHzoNzCP_kiXabolHOOwC-OInIn7roMMecj_p-zf4/s400/potato1.jpg" /></a><br />Inspired by the Hayes Valley Farm in San Francisco, today we built a Potato Tower. Instead of planting potatoes in a traditional manner, in a potato tower you plant them vertically in a tower made of chicken wire and straw. We layered seed potatoes and topsoil into the tower. In the picture above you can see the first layer of potatoes we put down. Below (left) is the tower as we are building it, and on the right is the finished product. Hopefully soon the potatoes will start leafing out the sides!<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivGDUt4vaOJWAN1V30dY8LsdUK64zIF642FOHANTEtqZdgJUtxjtKDMTh_b5X87cCe6d7iAkbeUmo_5YhKIbkc3-UnhNsx-XlhLLsLkqBLF5UMTMIK7Y60vneUTbF6y3ADbk-GSASFHKw/s1600/potato2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 191px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627075789140439538" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivGDUt4vaOJWAN1V30dY8LsdUK64zIF642FOHANTEtqZdgJUtxjtKDMTh_b5X87cCe6d7iAkbeUmo_5YhKIbkc3-UnhNsx-XlhLLsLkqBLF5UMTMIK7Y60vneUTbF6y3ADbk-GSASFHKw/s320/potato2.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioATTvtbNCJsjIGzooYbgVZdXx1KdOOIKXDERXwDefXw9SpeclRNlcnUdUHMuKCv_wEQm71fys7L9TBzAIIJUw6scQpawq1JN0wSZ2Rjp79bMAf2tciE-IDDaRMhEjZ-P4PCKI0hTkhQM/s1600/potato3.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 191px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627075717785076114" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioATTvtbNCJsjIGzooYbgVZdXx1KdOOIKXDERXwDefXw9SpeclRNlcnUdUHMuKCv_wEQm71fys7L9TBzAIIJUw6scQpawq1JN0wSZ2Rjp79bMAf2tciE-IDDaRMhEjZ-P4PCKI0hTkhQM/s320/potato3.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-24776266882830432602011-07-06T12:57:00.000-07:002011-07-06T13:11:26.817-07:00Work Party!Now that we have our garden beds planted, we'd like to welcome everyone to join in the fun and get your hands dirty. Although it was back-breaking work, we're glad to have it done! It also meant that today we got to start planting. We filled one bed with lettuce, spinach and carrots. We then covered the bed with remay cloth to protect the plants from deer and too much sun. It was a windy afternoon and the remay kept billowing up, so we decided to only plant one bed today. Although things rarely go as planned, we're thrilled that our garden is starting to really look like a garden! <br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX-ovtqdYfUUdJ1JQzTaycVHHoLGyEF8CIXHU3_7I0dCAA69I9OliqTrCotCSx6Myh16OXrw_jXEesixChwxCtg8lJhRHpHj3ox1YiEd7e03CzXAqeszUK445fLLDRMPceel6OssEUr8M/s1600/lettuce2.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624501623616804594" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX-ovtqdYfUUdJ1JQzTaycVHHoLGyEF8CIXHU3_7I0dCAA69I9OliqTrCotCSx6Myh16OXrw_jXEesixChwxCtg8lJhRHpHj3ox1YiEd7e03CzXAqeszUK445fLLDRMPceel6OssEUr8M/s320/lettuce2.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEM9boOBRH3QD0bizuvcF2kZVGa0sRdve8xa3UCmcQBtSodKECHcNOiTBLlYXoHM8b46NgUbxmdjQQeIdUzIDmHaJbJvHpzun3NQmwRMBJEVcY7L2BRWwjEYSCgNFvF41tTrTdhenH_wE/s1600/6bedswdirt.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5624501684191890482" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEM9boOBRH3QD0bizuvcF2kZVGa0sRdve8xa3UCmcQBtSodKECHcNOiTBLlYXoHM8b46NgUbxmdjQQeIdUzIDmHaJbJvHpzun3NQmwRMBJEVcY7L2BRWwjEYSCgNFvF41tTrTdhenH_wE/s320/6bedswdirt.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-54856382930552886772011-06-29T12:47:00.000-07:002011-06-29T13:07:58.816-07:00Greenhouse Update<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhVGY0vlyM8oXRc6KvArYdthHldfo72S99ITv951VuNUek_cUKhA3BBN3xefwPx2mVn6zubd-OlGSw_zkRICHFOY_SCeHVKhJqw8DjojNdAYHlkWNIw68Cl2ThE6LuHLY5yZi7cKQw6sc/s1600/peas+etc+2.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623730919055232194" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhVGY0vlyM8oXRc6KvArYdthHldfo72S99ITv951VuNUek_cUKhA3BBN3xefwPx2mVn6zubd-OlGSw_zkRICHFOY_SCeHVKhJqw8DjojNdAYHlkWNIw68Cl2ThE6LuHLY5yZi7cKQw6sc/s400/peas+etc+2.jpg" /></a> The weather has gotten warmer and our plants are nearly bursting out of their containers! The next step is to fill the beds!filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-32179552544997345622011-06-29T10:40:00.000-07:002011-06-29T10:55:27.637-07:00The Greenhouse<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeULGqW0K1hUCyc3Vteiqdt9ZUaGRxHcJmVSVzLrIXP0k5SddQGPNkEJYd_LpG2nDUr-RB-lRV6m2FBbz7GoVdguzyvmtrveuExJTF-OWMuE5maMbli8Hfehk0v3lDPHohBsFLX9auJ8w/s1600/peas+carrots+lettuce.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623698165422261426" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgeULGqW0K1hUCyc3Vteiqdt9ZUaGRxHcJmVSVzLrIXP0k5SddQGPNkEJYd_LpG2nDUr-RB-lRV6m2FBbz7GoVdguzyvmtrveuExJTF-OWMuE5maMbli8Hfehk0v3lDPHohBsFLX9auJ8w/s400/peas+carrots+lettuce.jpg" /></a>While we're building outside, our plants are busy growing in the greenhouse. Before school got out, students started seeds. They planted corn, radishes, basil, squash, peas, carrots, lettuce, spinach, chard, tomatoes and cauliflower. In the picture above you can see the peas, carrots, lettuce and squash (from left to right) all starting to grow. <br /><br />Robin brought over raspberry plants from her garden (below left) and more zucchini and pumpkin starts. Loon Lake Gardens and Pottery donated garlic starts (below right) and flowers for the school courtyard. Some of the corn, squash and tomatoes that the students started can be seen on the left side of the picture with the garlic. Although it's late in the season, we started some seeds of chamomile, basil, tomatoes, white pumpkins, and cilantro (far bottom left). On the right side of the seeds we started are some of the zucchini plants, jalepeno and habanero plants. <br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje5YWY52lJKyzyIo7qp8FglPuzYj63bkWCLJuVozw45_vrzv_DFFyc-T2KmJ6zoj51_pGMPxm5jWJtfK6ElKxn3AWUUcVPxNZJ1UD34kPFp-NquANw20oanRYlNmgmLubYC3erAGeELAU/s1600/raspberries.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623698528097041074" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje5YWY52lJKyzyIo7qp8FglPuzYj63bkWCLJuVozw45_vrzv_DFFyc-T2KmJ6zoj51_pGMPxm5jWJtfK6ElKxn3AWUUcVPxNZJ1UD34kPFp-NquANw20oanRYlNmgmLubYC3erAGeELAU/s320/raspberries.jpg" /></a> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6Iz4YrPu8_zay3kbH3AiZxx7gQQT4XfOuMjHirRxPN3iOWeiGz7zJnZT9Ty3Ge9qIfvuaOHrBVqgk4H1R0BOJ5FdFAjBGanLkMMrNVkx1JdUKCMV8fU63RrGlYvK9t_e1DBPNzGdXb1I/s1600/garlic.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623698453694042610" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6Iz4YrPu8_zay3kbH3AiZxx7gQQT4XfOuMjHirRxPN3iOWeiGz7zJnZT9Ty3Ge9qIfvuaOHrBVqgk4H1R0BOJ5FdFAjBGanLkMMrNVkx1JdUKCMV8fU63RrGlYvK9t_e1DBPNzGdXb1I/s320/garlic.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBSQs57aJiii0vzocWrtJn1ouuYLkzmtYHuU9NkQYb25egKQTd2a4UBOVfmmKzeZyxxkCXG-ohSP9ZdRZVldL04IgpYCklCrxpw0Gyy-ZyRQyunfhhWp53h14UrWYPae-yGtue3pghMFc/s1600/starts+and+squash.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623698359088409682" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBSQs57aJiii0vzocWrtJn1ouuYLkzmtYHuU9NkQYb25egKQTd2a4UBOVfmmKzeZyxxkCXG-ohSP9ZdRZVldL04IgpYCklCrxpw0Gyy-ZyRQyunfhhWp53h14UrWYPae-yGtue3pghMFc/s320/starts+and+squash.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-84218681963925705942011-06-28T14:19:00.000-07:002011-06-28T14:39:21.794-07:001 bed, 2 beds, 3 beds, 4!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjke07IQQnrSaam-lPNR63D8k2GR8E9CMRh7jjSqe2AzrTsayjXn1tvIT3HWjnUrg6ye7yK6ACjl8IJ4yRwADLOcqkY4DYVtV64Tb3Jfu5wB9dG54QnUOoT6slp7VcTX517P5hVBshC7Vk/s1600/2beds+in.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623383555395965394" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjke07IQQnrSaam-lPNR63D8k2GR8E9CMRh7jjSqe2AzrTsayjXn1tvIT3HWjnUrg6ye7yK6ACjl8IJ4yRwADLOcqkY4DYVtV64Tb3Jfu5wB9dG54QnUOoT6slp7VcTX517P5hVBshC7Vk/s400/2beds+in.jpg" /></a>Over the past week we've put some serious muscle and sweat into digging out the hillside, moving lumber and installing the beds. Each one has been a unique adventure! Initially each of the beds had three 2x6 boards on each side, but then we realized that because of the slope it would work better to have three on the downhill side and two on the uphill side. This meant pulling up beds we had already dug in and removing boards. But we're happy to have improved the technique. The weather is getting sunnier and warmer, the day we got two beds done was our first day here without rain. You can probably tell from the pictures, there's less snow in the background on the Mission Mountains!<br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVod1EZWKJqJhU45ECkwDviqLCZ66NdWmnqWNRmEnEVX8X9NSfa5ly1EJRbWAwMpId15JCanm6Vo-abQ8j1Ncgw9eo7FAUKtnaVe6u7xPTKLWlXu2cHIK-JFDEtaQ5hv1tVRhZO_3S5DI/s1600/3bedsdone.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623386603463849826" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVod1EZWKJqJhU45ECkwDviqLCZ66NdWmnqWNRmEnEVX8X9NSfa5ly1EJRbWAwMpId15JCanm6Vo-abQ8j1Ncgw9eo7FAUKtnaVe6u7xPTKLWlXu2cHIK-JFDEtaQ5hv1tVRhZO_3S5DI/s320/3bedsdone.jpg" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_BZK3mSKGveYbx6gbUJVWMK_1UTBjxWpJ96sz7hfCXkv-Y5AUSCK68VWGnCGDyFg0rGflhdmLoLkXPs1-wP49NUTH_m7whipQOB34wOsvxMD28DDw8eFnh7JI5lNbkorhnRSSWt1Jm_A/s1600/4bedsdone.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623386656939784242" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_BZK3mSKGveYbx6gbUJVWMK_1UTBjxWpJ96sz7hfCXkv-Y5AUSCK68VWGnCGDyFg0rGflhdmLoLkXPs1-wP49NUTH_m7whipQOB34wOsvxMD28DDw8eFnh7JI5lNbkorhnRSSWt1Jm_A/s320/4bedsdone.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-367048005990115317.post-35595217005575897532011-06-28T12:14:00.000-07:002011-06-28T13:59:43.279-07:00The First Bed Is In!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjywVTtsMp49L4dEUMZ5uuh-j8uNZ4_Hg8idSpiUNicnL4-hkUSB90Cnr1xJfHLkYEtMb7dbpOEqzCGwdK0kv64d_IhkqdTxwzuO0xbxfA5bmRkpMPeC4PM-neS16H5I4STvKp2bn5oZeU/s1600/1stbed+in.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 239px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623351218421640898" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjywVTtsMp49L4dEUMZ5uuh-j8uNZ4_Hg8idSpiUNicnL4-hkUSB90Cnr1xJfHLkYEtMb7dbpOEqzCGwdK0kv64d_IhkqdTxwzuO0xbxfA5bmRkpMPeC4PM-neS16H5I4STvKp2bn5oZeU/s400/1stbed+in.jpg" /></a>Putting in the first bed was no easy task! It may not look it, but the slope is fairly steep and we were torn between creating level beds and not wanting to dig out the whole hillside. In the first attempt there was a large gap between the ground and the bottom board on the downhill side. We attempted to patch it with spare wood, but weren't sure if this was a permanent solution.<br /><br /><br /><div>We spent a lovely Saturday morning picking up a truckfull of manure from the Kalispell Kreamery (only $10 if you want to get your own!) and then shoveling it back out of the truck. We even got to enjoy a bit of rain during the process! Witness the look of sheer joy on Tory's face on our manure adventure:<br /></div><br /><br /><div><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 191px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5623352354743216322" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOmu-1rKei6NMvxQWGcms0h69S4QifdVI4t-ccoBnXkJg89ZHZ41OYxt8ZcSaxhpga-6haD6-QgTrnSTrTNlvGq1l166N1Oc-kpt1HNZpq6NNAVzv084mjA3_mdXGr6StM30V6oea8jJc/s320/tory+manure.jpg" /></div>filmjeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01789028575477859601noreply@blogger.com0
